What should I upgrade first in my budget gaming and productivity PC?

I currently have a PC with an RTX 3060, an Intel Core i3-12100F, 16GB of DDR4 memory, an H610 motherboard, and a 650W power supply. I use it for casual gaming, university work, and small side projects such as mobile app and website development. I'd like to upgrade it gradually whenever I have the money, mainly to keep the system reasonably modern rather than making a huge jump immediately. My long-term GPU target might be something like an RTX 3080 Ti or RTX 4070. I have about $200 available for the first upgrade and am considering a used CPU. Would upgrading to something like a Core i5-12400F be a sensible starting point, and what compatibility or upgrade-order issues should I consider with my current motherboard and power supply?

Buying a used CPU can be a good way to stay within the budget. A 12400F is a reasonable target, while a 13th- or 14th-generation chip may cost more than it’s worth on an H610 platform. Before buying, confirm the exact motherboard model, check BIOS compatibility, and make sure the board has adequate cooling and power delivery. Your 650W supply should be fine for the current RTX 3060 and a 12400F, but revisit the power supply before installing a higher-end graphics card, especially a card with high transient power demand.

If you aren’t currently running into performance problems, there’s no urgent reason to upgrade yet. For a sensible first step, a used 12th-generation Core i5-12400F would be a noticeable improvement over the i3-12100F and should work with your H610 board, provided the BIOS supports it. Check your motherboard’s CPU support list and update the BIOS if necessary. Since H610 boards generally aren’t intended for overclocking, an unlocked K-series processor would not be worth the extra cost.

A 12400F is probably what I’ll look into first. I don’t currently need much more performance, so I’m mainly trying to make sensible upgrades over time.
