How should I start learning programming from scratch?

I'm interested in learning programming, but I find learning difficult and tend to get stuck when I don't fully understand something. I'm not sure which language to choose, what resources to use, or what kind of first project would make sense. How should a complete beginner get started without becoming overwhelmed?

Try working on a silly but useful personal project, such as a simple expense tracker. You can begin with a script and a spreadsheet, then gradually add features. An AI assistant can help explain errors or suggest changes, but make sure you attempt to understand and write the code yourself. When something breaks, investigate the error before asking for a solution so you actually learn from it.

Start by deciding what you want to make. Games, websites, chat bots, computer utilities, and small math programs can all lead you toward different tools. You don’t need to make the perfect choice, though—Python is a safe general-purpose option while you learn the basics. Pick a small project and learn only the next concept you need instead of trying to understand all of programming at once.

Python is a solid place to begin because the syntax is relatively approachable and there are plenty of free beginner lessons. Install it, open the interpreter, and try something simple like print("Hello, world!"). Then build tiny programs that solve problems you care about. Seeing a program work, even if it’s extremely small, makes the learning process feel much more concrete.

The desire to understand everything before starting can become a trap. Programming is far too broad to understand completely, even for experienced developers. Learn the basics, accept that some parts will be unclear, and return to them as you gain context. Short, regular practice and small experiments are usually more effective than waiting until you feel fully prepared.
