I recently learned about the Forward Deployed Engineer role and like the combination of software development, problem-solving, and customer collaboration. I understand that the job may involve building solutions for specific client needs, but I'm unsure what skills companies expect from someone starting out. Should I prioritize programming, cloud technologies, system design, debugging, or communication? What would be the best learning path, and what kinds of projects would demonstrate the right abilities?

Communication is nearly as important as coding. Forward Deployed Engineers have to clarify what a customer actually needs, explain trade-offs without unnecessary jargon, handle misunderstandings calmly, demonstrate their work, and respond to feedback. Practice requirements gathering, stakeholder management, testing, and explaining technical decisions while you build projects.
A practical order would be: one programming language, debugging, SQL, HTTP and APIs, Git, and basic cloud concepts. After that, study architecture and troubleshooting through real projects. Expectations vary quite a bit, so compare several junior job descriptions and look for recurring requirements. A background in consulting or technology services can help, but you can also develop the same skills through collaborative projects and customer-focused work.
Start with solid programming and debugging skills in one backend language. You’ll often need to understand and repair existing code, not just write new features. Add SQL, APIs, Git, and basic cloud deployment, then gradually learn system design. A useful project is a small application built for another person or organization and deployed somewhere, since that gives you practice turning a vague need into working software.
