Hey everyone! I'm currently pursuing my master's in computer science, and I've been having a bit of an existential crisis about my career path. I got into programming because I genuinely enjoy creating things, but lately, I've been questioning the purpose of what I'm building. Most job listings seem focused on boosting company efficiency, which feels pretty empty to me.
I'm looking for work that actually serves people and has a tangible human impact. I don't need to be a superhero, but I want to use my skills for something meaningful and necessary, not just for convenience.
So I have a few questions for you all:
1. Do technical jobs that focus on helping people even exist?
2. Has anyone here found fulfilling, people-centered development roles?
3. Are there communities (like on Discord, GitHub, or in real life) dedicated to creating technology for the greater good?
I'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks for reading! 🙏

You might want to seek out companies with missions that resonate with you and work on projects with them. It can be tough to find, but it's worth it!
A lot of company missions can come off as just a way to attract talent. I know someone who went to work for Tesla, drawn by the mission, but ended up underpaid. Sometimes it's better to find a job that offers work-life balance and spend your free time on causes that fulfill you.
Definitely check out 80,000 Hours! They offer free guidance and resources to help you find work that's more meaningful.
Yes, there are definitely jobs aimed at making a difference! Just remember, for meaningful work, someone needs to fund it too. I've impacted millions with my work, which feels great. Volunteering with nonprofits can also give you that feel-good factor.
I'd love to hear more about what your friend did!
