I'm a student who's diving into AI, and I'm wondering if the RTX 4060 Ti is a good choice for AI work. Or are there better alternatives in the same price range that could serve me better?

It really depends on what kind of AI projects you’re planning to tackle. If you're looking into large language models (LLMs), the RTX 4060 Ti might fall short, especially since those models can be quite large, and you’d need to heavily compress them to even consider running them. However, if your focus is on smaller models like vision decoders or image generators, then the RTX 4060 Ti could work for you just fine. So, it all comes down to the model size you're dealing with!

Just a heads up, models like the 35B and 70B are way too big for the RTX 4060 Ti. They won't fit in the GPU's VRAM at all. When calculating model sizes, each parameter takes up space, and you generally want a GPU with double the VRAM size of your model. So, unfortunately, even a top-tier GPU like the RTX 4090 wouldn’t manage those giant models without some serious tricks. You’ll need to look at smaller models or get a different setup if you want to work with those big boys.

If you're on a tight budget, you might want to consider renting GPUs instead. It can be a more cost-effective way to access more powerful hardware without the upfront investment.
