Why won’t my PC use the GPU instead of integrated graphics?

I've recently built a PC using some older components, but I'm having a frustrating issue. My system won't recognize my RTX 3080. When I boot up, the BIOS correctly shows the GPU type and the card's lights and fans are working fine. However, it still defaults to the integrated graphics. I've checked the device manager and the GPU doesn't show up at all. I've tried reseating the card multiple times and have switched the BIOS settings between PCIe and PEG, but nothing has worked. By the way, I'm definitely plugging the monitor cable into the GPU. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Sometimes a GPU’s ports can fail. If you're still having trouble after making sure everything is connected and reinstalled, consider the possibility that the card might not be seating correctly. You can also try disabling integrated graphics in the BIOS; that can sometimes force the system to recognize the dedicated GPU instead.

First things first, make sure the display cable is plugged into your GPU and not the motherboard. It sounds basic, but it’s an easy mistake to make. After that, take a look at the GPU seating in the PCIe slot. Sometimes reseating it can help. Also, if you haven't already, check that the power connector is securely attached to both the GPU and the PSU. Letting the card and its drivers reset can also help, so consider booting into safe mode and using a driver removal tool like DDU to uninstall old drivers before you reinstall the newest ones for the 3080.

Did you check if the GPU shows up in BIOS? If it does, you should definitely install the latest Nvidia drivers for it.

Don’t forget to check your NVIDIA Control Panel and set the GPU as the default graphics processor! Sometimes the system just needs a gentle nudge to make the right choice.

If the GPU isn't showing up in Device Manager, it's essential to have the right drivers installed. Check your internet connection since that could hinder downloading them. If you're having trouble connecting, that might be a bigger issue that you'll need to tackle first.

Yeah, that’s strange! If you can't connect to the internet, you might need to troubleshoot that issue first before anything else.
