Why Can’t My External DVD Drive Read Blank DVD-R Discs?

I just got a new external DVD drive about a week ago, and it finally arrived today. I tested it out with a copy of Tony Hawk's Underground 2, and it read that disc without any issues—I even managed to create an ISO using ImgBurn. But when I tried to use a blank DVD-R, the drive keeps making attempts to read it, which you can hear as it spins, and then it eventually emits this continuous deep beep. The disc shows up in File Explorer, but it doesn't recognize it. I'm puzzled—could this be a hardware issue, compatibility problem, or something else entirely?

Could you share some info about the DVD drive? If it's just a regular DVD drive, it might only read discs. If it's a writable drive, it could be that it doesn’t support DVD-R but needs DVD+R instead. Make sure you check for the symbols on the front; if it's marked only for DVD video, it likely can't burn DVDs at all.

The front of the drive states it supports Compact Disc, DVD+RW, and DVD-R/RW. I also have a pack of 50 HP DVD-Rs, which I thought would work.

You might want to check the manufacturer's website for a firmware update. It's common for drives to need updates so they can work with different types of blank media.

I did reinstall the drivers, but it didn't help. I did see that there might be a firmware update for my model, which is a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ8E1.

Is your drive just a reader, or is it capable of burning discs too?

The ads said it's a DVD player and burner, so it should be good to go.
