Why is Linux Mint asking for a password when I didn’t set one up?

I just installed Linux Mint and I didn't add a password during the setup. Now it's prompting me for a password that I haven't created. What's going on?

Did you end up installing the OS without creating a user? Sometimes that could cause issues during the setup process. Just check your installation method to be sure!

I did create one user, just didn't set any passwords.

I remember that the live installer requires a password to proceed. If your password fields are blank and the "Next" button is grayed out, maybe you accidentally set a simple password like "123"? A screenshot could help jog your memory!

Maybe you're right! I might have bypassed it somehow.

You might want to try just pressing Enter when it asks for the password. Sometimes the system asks for a password by default, but if you haven't set one, it should let you through with a blank entry.

I tried that too, but it didn't work.

Have you tried just leaving the password field empty? Sometimes that's all it takes to get past it.

Yeah, I tried that already.

If all else fails, you might need to reinstall the OS and make sure to set a password this time. You can enable auto-login later, but you'll need a password for admin tasks.
