I've been having a debate with my friend about the importance of activating Windows. How bad is it really to use an unactivated version? Are there real benefits to activating it, or can you get by just fine without it?

There's no definitive answer here. If you find that there are features you want that require activation, then it makes sense to activate. But if you're fine without those features and don't want to spend the cash, you're good without it. I personally would consider switching to Ubuntu if I wasn't activating.
I'm not bothered by the watermark, and I don't see the point in paying Microsoft either.
Activation doesn't change much aside from enabling some personalization features. You can actually activate it for free with a simple command line. It's not a huge deal if you decide not to.
Honestly, activating Windows doesn't offer much in terms of functionality for most users. You can pretty much use Windows 11 for free, and the developers don't really care if you activate it or not.
