Just Made the Switch to Linux, Any Tips for a Newbie?

Hey everyone! I recently installed Kubuntu on my laptop and I'm super excited about diving into the Linux world. I set it up on the same hard drive as my Windows setup (which I know isn't the best practice, but I backed up my important files). As a student who loves programming and spends a lot of time on my laptop, I've heard great things about Linux, and I'm ready to explore it. I'd love some advice on how to make the most out of my new OS, including any tips, tricks, or resources that could help me settle in. Thanks in advance! 🙂

Definitely take it slow with terminal commands! Make sure you understand what a command does before you execute it, especially commands like 'rm -rf' or 'chown' that can mess things up quickly. Better to be safe than sorry!

Preach! I'll double-check everything before I run it.

Check out the resources wiki we have; it’s packed with helpful info! Making regular backups is crucial, try experimenting in a VM to keep your main system safe. And definitely familiarize yourself with the man pages for commands to understand their usage better.

Explore various tools and options available! Mise en place for managing runtimes, try out a different terminal emulator like wezterm, and get to know the XDG specifications to keep your system organized. It really enhances your experience!

Thanks for these suggestions; I'm jotting them down!

Just have fun experimenting! Tweak the system until you break it, then see if you can fix it. It’s a great way to learn. If you don’t want to go that route, stick with the default setups until you're ready to dive deeper.

Haha, love that idea! I’ll definitely give it a shot!

Avoid running third-party scripts unless you're sure they’re safe. Keep track of all the commands you use and understand each one—this will help you troubleshoot later. You’ll encounter issues, but don’t worry, with time you’ll get the hang of it!
