I'm looking to give my old ASUS laptop, which used to run Windows 7, a new life with Linux. It's a 2010 model with an Intel Core i5-460M processor, 8GB of RAM, an Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics card, and a 640GB HDD. This will be my first experience with Linux, and right now I'm just watching videos to compare different distributions. I don't have a specific use case in mind, I just want to learn about Linux and experiment with the OS. Any recommendations for a distro that fits well with my hardware?

Don’t forget to check if you have any BIOS updates available while you still have Windows on there. It could help with performance when you switch over to Linux. Also, if you can replace your HDD with an SSD, it will open up a lot more distro options for you!
Any Linux flavor could work, especially if you swap your HDD for an SSD. If you prefer sticking with the HDD for now, just make sure to go for a lightweight distro.
MX Linux is another fantastic choice. It’s lightweight and performs well on older machines. I’ve used both Mint and MX Linux, and they both did well on my older setups with similar specs.
For a laptop like yours, I’d definitely recommend going with Linux Mint, especially the Xfce version. It’s user-friendly and runs well on older hardware. I have it on my Acer Aspire, and it works great!
If you're new, definitely check out the Mint installation instructions thoroughly. Watching videos can be helpful, but they can also miss some key steps.
Totally agree, MX Linux is fantastic for learning! Plus, if you run into performance issues, look into upgrading to an SSD; it makes a world of difference.
