Is HDMI 2.1 Worth It for Gaming?

Hey, everyone! I'm looking to buy a new monitor since I want a larger screen for my HP Victus 16-rxxx laptop, which has a 144Hz refresh rate and a GeForce 4060, along with HDMI 2.1 ports. Now, I'm trying to decide if I should go for a monitor with HDMI 2.1 to take advantage of its features, or if a monitor with HDMI 2.0 would suffice. Also, what happens if my monitor and laptop have different HDMI versions, like 2.1 vs. 2.0? I'm mainly going to use it for gaming, like shooters and open-world games, so I'm concerned that choosing a 2.0 monitor might be a downgrade. I'm pretty new to this tech stuff, so any insights would be super helpful!

I found a great video that covers this topic thoroughly: https://youtu.be/X93bXnG0GVI?si=oVUoMB1afIBooDUg. Also, I ended up choosing DisplayPort for my setup because I already had the cable, and I wasn't able to get the HDMI 2.1 cable. Good luck with your new setup!

It really depends on the monitor’s capabilities. HDMI 2.0 supports 4K at 60Hz or 5K at 30Hz, and can manage 1080p at least at 120Hz. I'm not exactly sure how 1440p fits in. As for HDR, it could complicate things, so you'll want to check the specific features of the monitor you choose.

So it's really all about the specs of the device? The HDMI port just affects speed, not the video quality?

Exactly! Make sure to look at the other specs too.
