How to Safely Restrict an iPhone for Kids, Allowing Only WhatsApp?

Hey folks! We're relocating, and my young child wants to keep in touch with school friends via a WhatsApp group. Initially, I was against it, but I said I'd look into the possibility. I'm quite concerned about security on our network since, while they are somewhat tech-savvy, they're still kids and can get into trouble online. I want to allow access only to this WhatsApp group and prevent any browsing, emailing, or calling on the device.

Here's what I've thought about so far:

- SIM card with a data plan could get pricey because of all the videos they'll likely send.
- OpenDNS + Guest WiFi sounds good, but I'm unsure about its security and whether it might unintentionally bridge to our main network. Plus, I doubt OpenDNS can block every potential phishing site since it seems more focused on content.

I'm looking for realistic suggestions on how to navigate this situation. I want my child to use the WhatsApp group, but I can't jeopardize our network security, either at home or work, and I want to avoid unsupervised internet access. Any ideas? Thanks!

I've used Norton Family for my kids, and it worked well for us. You can set which apps they're allowed to use, including blocking Safari. It also lets you set time limits for usage. People often criticize Norton, but I've found their 360 package offers good protection. Best of luck with your choice!

Thanks for the recommendation! I've avoided Norton for a long time but might reconsider if it can help.

Have you considered using parental controls? They can give you more control over what your kid can access. It's definitely worth looking into, though I'm not super familiar with all the Apple options available. Are they usually detailed enough to manage apps effectively?

I'm really not too familiar with Apple products. I guess I should check out the parental control options they have to offer.

Consider using Assistive Access mode; it lets you choose specific apps for use. As for the data plan, you can set a £0 spending limit, which will stop usage if it hits that limit. It’s a good lesson in budgeting too!

Have you looked into apps like Bark or Spyrix? They come with paid and free versions and can help monitor device use while allowing access to limited apps.

If you set the iPhone to single app mode, that could solve your concerns. I think Apple Configurator is the way to go. Plus, it's free! That way, your kid can only access WhatsApp without wandering off elsewhere.

I didn't even know Apple Configurator existed! Using guest WiFi with single app mode sounds like it could work.

I get where you're coming from, but I think it might be limiting to only allow WhatsApp. As someone who had strict controls as a kid, I'm all for balanced approaches. You might also want to check out Family Link for more comprehensive device control.

He’s pretty responsible, but I worry about the types of ads or links he might encounter. He knows to ask if something is sketchy, but I still want to protect him as much as possible.
