How Do I Get Started in a DevOps Career?

Hey everyone! I'm new here and looking for some career advice. I used to be a primary school teacher, but I made the switch to IT, starting as a field engineer and now doing some 1st and 2nd line support. I've started helping out our infrastructure team, and I've been told that a career in DevOps could be a good fit for me. I'm eager to learn more about it, but I don't have much experience in this area. I've just begun a course on Scientific Computing with Python to get my feet wet. What are some good tips for breaking into DevOps? What should I focus on learning first? I've heard people say to "just start automating everything," and I plan to do that, but I'm curious about when I should aim to apply for junior positions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The best way to dive into DevOps is to spend a lot of time programming in your spare time. It's crucial to understand the software development lifecycle. Since you already have an IT background, you're halfway there! I followed a similar path and wouldn’t have made it without those extra hours of coding. Once you create a simple web app, try deploying it on AWS using Terraform and integrate some monitoring tools – that's a solid foundation!

Check out the DevOps roadmap at roadmaps.sh/devops. It's a great visual guide that lays out the skills and technologies you need to get started in DevOps. It can help you prioritize your learning and figure out what to focus on first!

Honestly, this question comes up a lot, like 3-5 times a day! But don't let that stop you from asking; everyone has a slightly different journey. Just keep learning and building – that's the best part!

I recommend starting with Linux – it's the backbone of most DevOps tools. Consider getting your RHCSA certification or similar to build a strong foundation in systems administration. It's really useful when working with DevOps practices.
