Why can’t I burn CDs or DVDs with my external drive?

I'm having a tough time burning CDs and DVDs with my external drive. When I try to burn a CD, I get an error message that says, "Windows Media Player could not complete burning because the disc is not compatible with your drive. Try inserting a different kind of recordable media or use a disc that supports a write speed that is compatible with your drive." I'm using Sony CD-RW burnable CDs that are rated for mult-speed (1x, 2x, 4x) with a cheap non-branded external drive I got from Amazon. The burning process only finishes at 99% before it ejects with the error, and I've had the same problem with DVDs too. I've adjusted the burning speed to low, but I heard there's a way to check the exact speed in numerical format, and I'm not sure how to do that. Fingers crossed I don't have to buy a new drive or different CDs!

I suggest checking the specs of your drive in the Amazon order history or looking at the label on the drive itself. You might find out that it can't handle rewritable discs. Remember, -RW discs are not as commonly used, so not all drives support them. Plus, if it's an older model, that could be a factor too. Good luck!

Honestly, with a cheap drive, you might just be getting cheap results. Sometimes those budget options don’t deliver on their promises. If you've confirmed that your drive should handle the CDs but it's still giving you trouble, it might be worth testing with a few different types of media. Also, if you have a link to your drive, it might help others provide more tailored advice.

First off, double check if your drive actually supports CD-RW discs. A lot of the cheaper drives only handle CD-R type media. If it only supports -R, it might explain the errors you're getting. You could also try burning with a different software like InfraRecorder; it's free and often better than the built-in options. It might give you more flexibility and clearer error messages too!
