Why is My Gaming PC Still Overheating Even with a Liquid Cooler?

I recently built a gaming PC intended for both gaming and game development, but I'm running into serious overheating issues. Initially, when I played demanding games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, my CPU temperatures soared above 100°C. I also encountered high temps in other games like Forza Horizon 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, where my CPU reached between 85°C and 95°C.

To combat this, I installed a Deepcool Castle X240 liquid cooler which did help a bit, lowering the temps to between 56°C and 70°C. However, during a gaming session of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, I still saw the temperature spike back up to 95°C to 100°C.

Most recently, while installing a repacked version of Expedition 33, I checked Task Manager and noticed my CPU usage was at 99%. The temperature shot up past 80°C, even hitting 103°C at one point. While playing Expedition 33, my CPU temps stayed above 85°C, even though it's only 33°C outside. What could be causing my CPU to overheat like this?

As for your CPU temperature during heavy load, the Intel Core i5-13400 ideally shouldn't exceed 85°C. It's good to keep it below that for better performance and longevity. If it’s hitting 100°C, you’re running a serious risk of thermal throttling or even permanent damage.

It sounds like there could be a few issues here. First, make sure your liquid cooler is mounted correctly. Sometimes the cooler doesn't make proper contact with the CPU, or a protective film might still be on the cooler's base. If that's all good, check if the pump is working as it should. If it wasn’t functioning properly, that could definitely lead to those high temperatures under load.
