Can I Play Games on Linux with an Old AMD GPU?

Hey everyone! I've got two computers—one running Arch and the other on Windows. Both have an aging AMD Radeon HD 4850. I'm running into issues as it seems like Proton mostly requires Vulkan support, which my GPU doesn't provide. I tried to play Risk of Rain 2 on both systems but only got about 40-50 fps on Windows, while on Arch, it's a painful 1 frame every 5 seconds! I suspect it's defaulting to software rendering. Is there any hope for playing games on Linux with my current setup? Unfortunately, I can't afford any upgrades at the moment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, your GPU is pretty outdated, which makes things tricky since most modern games on Linux rely heavily on Vulkan support. DirectX games are converted to Vulkan using tools like DXVK, but if a game only has OpenGL or runs on CPU software rendering, you might still be able to play. Focus on games that support OpenGL or those specifically designed for Linux, as they sometimes don't need that hardware-heavy setup. It might take some testing to find what runs well on your system!

Gotcha, my GPU may be old but I’m making do. Is there an easy way to filter my Steam library for OpenGL games, or am I stuck searching through them one by one? I know I can sort by 'native Linux', but I'm not sure it guarantees OpenGL support.
