How can I check if Computrace is enabled on a Linux system?

Hey everyone! A while back, my boss let me take home an old computer that was headed for the junk pile. I've finally realized that I'm still under their domain, and I decided to install Linux to wipe the disk. However, I didn't check if Computrace was enabled while it was still running Windows. Is there a way for me to check its status while I'm running Linux now?

To check if Computrace is active, you'll need to boot into BIOS. Look for the Security tab where Computrace settings are listed. If it's listed as Enabled but not Activated, you’re good to go! If it shows Activated, you'll have a bit more trouble on your hands. Just remember to set it to Permanently Disabled if you can!

Got it! I’ll make sure to follow those steps when I get a chance to access the BIOS.

Computrace is actually a BIOS feature, so you shouldn’t need Windows to check it. You can typically find the status by booting into the BIOS settings. Look for the Security tab and see if you can find Computrace or sometimes called Absolute. The options will show if it's Enabled, Activated, or Permanently Disabled. It's worth noting that the default setting is usually Enabled, but it may not be actively running. If it says Activated, you won't be able to change that setting, though! Good luck!

I understand your concern about contacting Computrace directly. I suggest first checking the BIOS as mentioned. You’re using a Dell desktop, so it might have slightly different options than a Lenovo, but the general idea should be the same. Keep in mind, if you had to reach out to the original company, it can be a hassle if Computrace is indeed activated.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll definitely check the BIOS first before thinking about contacting anyone else.
