Can My Old PC Handle Red Dead Redemption 2?

Hey everyone! My wife is really excited about playing Red Dead Redemption 2, but I'm a bit worried about whether our second-hand PC can handle it. Right now, it has an Asus H81M-C motherboard, a GTX 960 graphics card (which I plan to upgrade), 16GB of DDR3 RAM, and an Intel i5 4690k processor, along with a 512GB SSD.

I know RDR2 is pretty demanding compared to the other game she plays, which is mostly House Flipper. I'm looking for some advice! Do you think it's possible to run RDR2 even on low settings with this setup? Also, is it possible to upgrade the RAM to 32GB, and can I add more storage with my motherboard? I've tried researching but a lot of the technical jargon confuses me. Thanks for any help you can give!

Honestly, I'd recommend using your current setup for now while saving for something better. Expecting a constant 60FPS might be unrealistic, but your i5 can run RDR2. For a decent gaming experience, look for a used RTX 2070 Super to replace the GTX 960—it’ll handle RDR2 much better than what you currently have.

Just give RDR2 a try on low settings. Your current setup should be able to handle a bit of the game, and as for RAM and additional storage, just getting a SATA SSD to complement your current setup would be a good move. But for long-term gaming, you might want to think about saving for a new system!

You might be able to squeeze out 30-40 FPS on low settings with the GTX 960. And yes, you have the option to upgrade to 32GB of RAM, but since the system is quite dated, you might want to consider upgrading the entire PC eventually. There are plenty of SATA ports on your motherboard, so adding a secondary SSD is totally possible, just make sure you have the right connectors.

Yeah, I’d definitely go for a SATA SSD if you can. It’ll really speed things up for storage!

Just keep in mind—DDR3 is quite outdated, so while you can upgrade now, that might limit your options later.

Yes, your setup meets the minimum specs to run RDR2, but it might be a stretch. Upgrading to 32GB of RAM is doable, but it might not be necessary since the Intel i5 4690k is quite old, and RAM can be pricey for DDR3. You would eventually need to upgrade the ram again if you decide to go for a new motherboard later on.

RDR2 might run on your current setup, but it won't be a great experience on those settings. If you can grab a GTX 1660 or something similar for an upgrade, that would help your performance a lot without emptying your wallet. Also, I think it’s pretty safe to say you won’t need 32GB of RAM right now—16GB should be fine for that game, at least on lower settings.
