Should I Upgrade My WiFi Router For Gaming?

Hey everyone! I just got my first proper gaming setup with a Legion 7i gen 8 tower after years of playing on old laptops. I'm trying to make sure everything is top-notch since I really want to enjoy my gaming experience. I'm currently using Spectrum's basic router, but I'm wondering if it's worth spending $200 on a decent WiFi 6E router. I mainly play games like Dune: Awakening, Enshrouded, and Last Epoch, but I'm not into competitive shooters. Just to note, my apartment layout prevents me from using an Ethernet cable, so I'd like to hear if the router upgrade would make a significant difference!

I say don't stress over upgrading just yet. The games you're playing don't need super low ping. I play online multiplayer and either use wireless or a powerline adapter with my basic ISP router, and I usually get around 25 ping. Anything under 60ms is good enough for casual gameplay, so I think you'll be just fine!

Honestly, connecting your PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable would be the best solution, and a lot cheaper than buying a new router. Less latency, you know? But I get it, if your apartment layout doesn't allow for cables, that complicates things. You might want to stick with your Spectrum setup for now; you likely won't notice much difference for the games you're playing.

I assumed that would be the case! I do experience a bit of lag in Dune, but the game isn't fully released yet, so it might not be my WiFi. Thanks!

What model is your current router? That can help determine if an upgrade might actually benefit you.

I’ll have to look that up. I think it’s just the basic one they provide for around $40-50.

For WoW and the games you're into, you're totally good with what you have. If you ever move to more competitive FPS games in the future, you could consider an upgrade then, but for now, save that money! If you happen to find a long high-speed Ethernet cable, it could be worth it for special occasions, though.

What kind of wireless speeds are you actually getting with your connection? That might help in figuring this all out!
