I have a TrueNAS system with an important encrypted dataset that contains all of our code data used for revision control. I had to set up a new TrueNAS instance, and while the dataset is still there, it's requesting the decryption key to access it. A former employee mentioned that the key was saved in our password manager, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm really worried that without this key, I won't be able to access the data. Is there any way to recover the dataset, or is it completely inaccessible at this point?

Make sure you thoroughly check your password manager again. Sometimes entries might be mislabeled, so look for anything that resembles a 64-character hex string. Also, check if the key file might still be in a directory on your system unless that’s also been cleared.
Unfortunately, if a dataset is encrypted, there’s really no way to recover the data without the key. That's the whole point of encryption; it's designed to keep data secure. If there’s no security flaw, it’s likely that data is lost permanently.
You could try restoring from a backup, but keep in mind that if the dataset was encrypted before you made the backup, restoring it won't include the decryption key. So you would still need the key to access anything.
