Should I Go for RTX 4070 or 4070 Super for 1080p Gaming?

Hey there! I'm currently running an i5 9400F paired with an RTX 3060 12GB. It's been decent for playing most games at high settings with some upscaling, managing to hover around 60 FPS, though some titles really push the limits on my CPU, especially demanding games like Warhammer 40K. I'm considering upgrading my whole rig since I'm planning to sell my current build.

Now, with a Ryzen 7 9700X in mind, I'm trying to decide between the RTX 4070 and the RTX 4070 Super. I want to know if either of these cards would comfortably run games at 1080p on ultra settings with ray tracing for the next 4-5 years without needing to lower settings or use upscaling. The prices I'm seeing are approximately 53K for the RTX 4070 and 67K for the Super.

I'm currently using a 1080p LG IPS 75Hz monitor which should serve me well for a couple of years, potentially upgrading to QHD down the line. Some have suggested going for the RTX 4060Ti for 1080p gaming, but the benchmarks indicate it might not hold up without compromises. I don't want to cheap out this time and end up regretting it again. What do you all think?

Honestly, aiming for 5 years without any scaling can be a stretch, especially with graphics getting more demanding. If you want consistent ULTRA without downgrading, the 4070 Super seems like a better bet, but you’ll have to weigh that against your budget. For now, if your build isn’t a hindrance, maybe just kick back and see how prices move in the market for a bit longer.

Right? Like, the 4070 might not cut it for future titles as they ramp up graphics. It’s definitely worth considering if you're planning on keeping it long-term.

Consider upgrading your monitor along with the GPU! If you're going for the 4070, maybe sell your current monitor and put that money towards a decent 120Hz monitor—1080p at high refresh rates can make a big difference in gaming. Once you step up to QHD later, yeah, it’ll need some adjustments, but for now, you should be fine!

I’m on board with this! Having the right monitor can elevate your whole experience. Just be cautious about your budget when you make that leap.

The prices you mentioned for the 4070 and 4070 Super seem pretty in line. Just a heads up, I've heard lately that the 5070 hasn't been much more expensive than the 4070 Super. Depending on what you're looking for, that might be worth considering too! As for your original question about longevity at 1080p ultra settings, while the 4070 could handle most games well now, keep in mind that the landscape changes fast. It might not be a bad idea to wait a bit for an even better deal.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that the recent pricing shifts have made waiting seem like a solid option. Plus, with upcoming releases, it might make more financial sense to see how the market settles.
