Should I take an IT support internship if it’s not coding-related?

Hey everyone! I'm a second-year Software Engineering student and I just got offered an internship that I need to decide on within 24 hours. It's a decent pay but focuses on IT support, mainly client interactions and troubleshooting, rather than coding. This would be my first of three internships required for my co-op program, and since it's 8 months long, it counts as two. That's making things complicated for me.

On one hand, it's paid, I'll gain valuable work experience, and it ensures I'm not left without an internship. On the downside, it doesn't align with my software development career goals, and I'm worried it won't be beneficial in the long run. I also don't want it to push me into an IT support career path. I'm also feeling nervous about possibly declining it and not finding another opportunity since I've applied to many places without success.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is it better to take this internship just to have something on my resume, or should I wait for a more development-oriented role? I'd really appreciate your thoughts!

It sounds like it's worth it to take the internship. Even if it's not directly related to software development, skills in client support and troubleshooting can be a stepping stone. Just make sure that you know what to expect, and see if they have any potential avenues for you to explore programming once you’re in!

Definitely go for it! Internships are about getting experience and building connections. Plus, as someone mentioned, you might end up liking this path more than you think. You can always transition into more coding roles later on. Just exposure to the tech field counts for a lot!

Taking this internship could be a great way to get your foot in the door! Even if it's not coding-focused, you'll build valuable soft skills and gain work experience, which are super important in any field. Plus, heading into your career with some real-world experience will set you up for better opportunities down the road. Since it counts for two internships, that's a bonus too! How are your coding skills right now? Sometimes you can find ways to integrate them into IT roles. Overall, I'd say go for it!

Absolutely! Soft skills from client interaction can be super beneficial later. And if you excel, who knows? You might be able to sneak in some programming tasks and impress your future employers!

Yeah, you've got to consider the job market. First internships are rarely ideal, but they help you gain experience. You'll likely find chances to do some programming if you express your interest. Just be proactive! I was in a similar spot, and I ended up finding opportunities to write scripts during my internship that helped boost my resume!

That's a solid approach! It's all about making the most of the situation you find yourself in.

I'd say hold out for something more aligned with development if you believe there's a real chance to find it, but if you doubt that, accepting this internship isn’t a bad call. Every bit of experience matters and can help in the long run; just don’t lose sight of your goals!
