Why can’t my laptop run games like it used to?

Hey everyone! I used to have a solid gaming experience on my laptop, but now I'm facing some serious performance issues. For example, I could run Elden Ring on medium graphics at 60 fps, but now I'm struggling to get less than 20 fps, even on the lowest settings. It's really frustrating because I can still play new-gen games; it's just the titles I used to run fine that are giving me trouble. Here are my specs:

- CPU: Intel Core i5 @ 2.50GHz
- OS: Windows 11 Home 64-bit
- RAM: 16GB Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 1463MHz
- Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics (MSI) and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU (MSI)

I've tried to figure this out and would really appreciate any help you have! Thanks!

Have you checked if your laptop's power settings are set to run at full performance? Sometimes laptops will default to lower power modes to save battery, which can really hurt performance. Make sure you're not in energy saver mode!

Good point! I didn't think about that. When I click the battery icon, it shows energy saver is off, but I'll dig into it more to be sure.

It sounds like you might be running on integrated graphics instead of your GPU. Check the NVIDIA control panel to see if you can change the rendering device to the RTX 3060. Also, overheating can cause throttling, so it might be a good idea to clean out any dust and consider reapplying thermal paste if you haven't done that in a while.

Could you tell me how to find that rendering device setting? And I was thinking about the thermal paste too, just didn't think it would be that big of a deal on a laptop!

First up, have you checked your GPU drivers? Sometimes they can go out of date, and that can mess with your gaming performance. Also, make sure your NVIDIA settings are prioritizing the graphics card correctly. Lastly, don't forget to check your power settings and make sure your laptop is set to performance mode instead of energy saver—this can seriously affect how games run!

I’ve checked the drivers, and everything seems updated! I’ll definitely have a look at those power settings you mentioned—thanks!
