So, what exactly do machine learning engineers do?

I've been considering specializing in machine learning, but I'm not quite sure what the day-to-day job really looks like. Is it mostly about training models and dealing with data, or is there more to it? How much of the role involves preparing data versus actually implementing machine learning algorithms? What does a typical machine learning engineer actually do? Is it all just data science?

From what I've heard, a lot of machine learning engineer (MLE) work leans toward data science, especially in most companies. If you're building large-scale AI models, there's a bit more involved, like software engineering, hardware know-how, and networking. However, you probably won't find one person doing all these tasks. Generally speaking, most MLEs focus on data science and work with ML tools to support business needs.

What kind of hardware tasks are involved? I'm really into hardware, and I’d like to know what might fit better with my interests.
