I recently opened my GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition because it had become unusually hot and loud. The card is several years old, and an undervolt attempt did not seem to change anything, so I decided to replace the GPU die thermal interface material. The thermal pads looked intact, but the original paste had poor, uneven coverage. I cleaned the die with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry, applied a sheet of PTM, and reassembled the card. All screws were installed snugly and nothing visibly broke or fell off during disassembly.
Since then, the computer works normally for everyday tasks, but launching games often causes the GPU to crash and reboot the system. Occasionally I see nvcontainer or RuntimeBroker memory-access errors beforehand. Monitoring appears mostly normal, although GPU utilization fluctuates at idle. I am wondering whether the spring bracket could be installed incorrectly, the cooler could be applying too much or too little pressure, the PTM could be unsuitable, or the indented thermal pads might be preventing proper contact. What should I inspect or reseat first, and is there a reasonable way to determine whether the GPU core or memory was damaged?

Pay particular attention to the spring-loaded GPU bracket. If it is flipped or installed in the wrong orientation, the core may not have consistent pressure against the heatsink. Also check whether the heatsink base is flat and whether the PTM made an even imprint. Avoid overtightening; tighten the GPU spring screws gradually in a cross pattern until they are snug, not forced.
The most likely cause is something related to the disassembly or reassembly rather than the driver. Open it again and inspect the die, cooler contact surface, spring bracket, screws, and every nearby component under good lighting. Make sure the bracket is oriented correctly and that the cooler sits evenly. Check for displaced pads, contamination, or anything that could prevent the board from sitting flat. PTM can work well on the die, so replacing it immediately is not necessarily the first step.
