Apple Gift Card Balance Dropped to $0 During a MacBook Purchase—What Can I Do?

I had a $500 Apple gift card that I received as a merit award from my employer. While purchasing a MacBook Air through Apple's official website, I entered the gift card information at checkout and the full $500 was applied to the order. Before submitting the purchase, I paused to double-check the computer's specifications. By the time I returned, the checkout session had timed out. I started the purchase again, but the gift card balance was now showing $0, and I could no longer apply it to the order.

I submitted a claim asking Apple to investigate, since the transaction history should show where the $500 went. After about 10 days, I received an automated response saying they could not help. A later call to customer support also went nowhere because the representative said they could not access the gift-card department.

The money has disappeared, but I never received a product or an order confirmation. Has anyone dealt with a gift-card balance being consumed during a timed-out checkout? What is the best way to get this escalated and have Apple trace or restore the funds?

A checkout timeout can sometimes leave a temporary authorization or pending redemption, so it may be worth asking whether the $500 is being held rather than permanently spent. However, if the balance remains at zero after several days, Apple needs to investigate the redemption record and either complete the matching order or restore the gift-card funds.

That definitely isn’t normal. Call again and specifically request an escalation to the gift-card or payment team. Someone with access to the gift-card transaction history should be able to determine whether the balance was placed on a temporary authorization, applied to an order that failed, or transferred somewhere else.

That’s what I’m trying to do, but the support representatives I’ve reached say they can’t connect me with the gift-card team. So far Apple has treated it as if there’s nothing they can do.

Since the card was entered directly on Apple’s official website—not through a third-party retailer—the issue should be traceable through Apple’s own systems. Keep the card details, original balance information, checkout date and time, screenshots, and any claim numbers together, then ask for a supervisor or a formal case review. Also confirm that no order was created under your account or email address.

It was definitely processed through Apple’s website. There was no third-party store involved, and I never received an order confirmation or any product.
