Are Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs Still at Risk on ASUS Motherboards?

I'm a first-time builder who recently started putting together a system with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and an ASUS motherboard. I've come across older reports about 9800X3D processors failing, particularly with certain ASRock and ASUS boards, and it has me worried. Is this still an active issue, especially on newer 600- or 800-series motherboards? Besides updating the BIOS to the latest version, are there any sensible steps I should take to reduce the risk, such as checking voltage settings or using a mild undervolt?

The important detail is which chipset your board uses. ASUS acknowledged issues involving some 800-series boards, so updating to the newest BIOS is the main recommended step. If you’re still concerned, avoid aggressive manual overclocking and keep an eye on CPU voltage and temperatures.

Some users have run multiple ASUS X870 boards without seeing any failures, so it doesn’t seem like every ASUS setup is affected. I’d start with the current BIOS, leave voltage settings on safe defaults, and only consider manual voltage tuning if you understand the risks.

The problem was discussed much more heavily several months ago. At least one builder reported no further trouble after updating their ASRock board’s BIOS, which suggests the firmware updates addressed much of the original problem.

Most of the reports were concentrated on ASRock boards, with fewer cases involving ASUS and other manufacturers. The issue appears to have been tied to motherboard firmware and excessive voltage behavior rather than every 9800X3D being inherently defective.
