After gaming on a laptop for about six years, I'm planning to build my first desktop PC. The main demanding use case will be DCS World in VR with a Meta Quest 3S, along with Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione. A friend can help me assemble it, and I've checked compatibility with several PC-building tools, but I'd like opinions from experienced builders.
My current parts list is:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D — €277.25
- CPU cooler: Corsair Nautilus 240 RS LCD — €60
- GPU: Gigabyte RTX 5070 Eagle OC 12GB GDDR7 — €621.43
- Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi — €180
- RAM: Goodram IRDM DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MHz CL30 — €415
- SSD: Lexar NM790 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe — €244.21
- PSU: Corsair RM850e — €120
- Case fans: Corsair RS120 PWM triple pack — €30
- Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow — €92.10
The total is around €2,040. I currently have an MSI gaming laptop with an i7-9750H, 16GB of DDR4-2666 memory, and a GTX 1650 4GB, which I hope to sell for roughly €400–450. That would put my effective cost near €1,650. I'm especially interested in whether the RTX 5070 is a good choice for VR or whether a Radeon RX 9070 or RX 9070 XT would make more sense.

The memory specification is a good match for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, but check the price carefully. If 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 costs substantially more than slower kits, you could save money with a cheaper option and potentially upgrade another component. That said, 6000MHz CL30 is widely considered the ideal balance for Ryzen 7000, so it’s worth keeping if the price difference is reasonable.
The 4000D Airflow is decent, but it may not be the best value because comparable cases often include more fans for less money. You could save there and put the difference toward the GPU. An RX 9070 XT is also worth checking: it usually costs a bit more than the RTX 5070 but can perform closer to an RTX 5070 Ti, while the regular RX 9070 is often priced near the 5070 and offers more VRAM and stronger raster performance.
I did find a good deal on an RX 9070 XT, but I’m unsure about choosing it for VR. I’ve heard Nvidia tends to have better compatibility, even though AMD has improved quite a bit compared with its earlier problems.
The build is generally solid, although the RM850e may be a little expensive depending on local pricing. You could also compare similarly priced newer-generation motherboards. For the graphics card, an RX 9070 is worth considering if you care more about raw performance and VRAM than Nvidia’s feature set. The better choice depends on current prices and how important Nvidia-specific features are to you.
That’s why I chose it—I had read that DDR5-6000 is the sweet spot for this processor. I’ll still compare prices to make sure the CL30 kit isn’t unusually expensive.
