I keep seeing gaming PCs paired with expensive X670, X670E, X870, or X870E motherboards even when they use a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 processor, one graphics card, and a PCIe 4.0 SSD. In many cases, the extra PCIe slots are empty and the system is used almost entirely for gaming. What practical benefits do these higher-end boards provide over a well-equipped B650 or B850 board? Are the extra USB ports, Wi-Fi 7, networking, VRMs, storage slots, PCIe lanes, or upgrade potential worth the added cost, or is this mostly paying for features people may never use?

The less defensible reason is simply assuming that an expensive CPU requires an expensive motherboard. Marketing makes extra power phases, premium components, and phrases like “future-proof” sound essential, even though they may provide no noticeable benefit in a normal gaming system. Future upgrades can justify some headroom, but motherboard features are only valuable if you actually expect to use them. For a straightforward single-GPU gaming PC, a strong B650 or B850 board is usually the sensible choice.
Sales and bundles also explain a lot of it. An X870 board may cost only a little more than the B-series option after a CPU, memory, or retailer bundle discount. At that point, buying the more capable board is reasonable even if the buyer does not currently use every feature. Aesthetics, preferred layouts, and diagnostic displays can matter too—people are allowed to spend extra on a build they enjoy.
For gaming performance, you’re basically right: the chipset itself usually makes little or no difference. A decent B650 or B850 board can run a Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, and even many higher-end CPUs without sacrificing FPS. The main reasons to choose an X-series board are extra I/O, more M.2 and SATA slots, additional PCIe lanes, USB4, better diagnostic features, or specific overclocking options. Those are convenience and expansion benefits, not automatic performance gains.
Storage and lane layout are probably the strongest practical reasons. Some X670E and X870E boards can run several NVMe drives without disabling other slots or sharing bandwidth with the graphics card. If you need three, four, or five M.2 drives, multiple add-in cards, fast USB4 storage, or several network adapters, the extra connectivity can be worth it. For someone using one SSD and one GPU, it generally isn’t.
Exactly. I chose an X-series board because I needed several NVMe drives and wanted to avoid lane-sharing compromises. It had nothing to do with getting more gaming performance.
Some buyers want features that are easy to overlook until they need them: more rear USB ports, USB-C headers, Wi-Fi 7, faster Ethernet, optical audio, BIOS flashback, clear-CMOS buttons, debug LEDs, stronger memory tuning, or a particular PCIe layout. Small-form-factor boards can especially benefit from extra onboard connectivity. If one of those features is important, the higher-end board may be cheaper and cleaner than adding expansion cards later.

The VRM argument is often exaggerated too. Most reputable B-series boards already have more than enough power delivery for gaming CPUs, so the processor’s silicon quality usually becomes the limit before the motherboard does.
