Best CPU Upgrade for Gaming and Creative Work

I currently have an older i7-9700k running on a Z390 motherboard, paired with an RTX 4080. I mostly game at 4K, but I sometimes downscale to 1440 or 1080p. I've noticed inconsistent frame times and I'm looking for a more stable gaming experience. I'm planning to visit Microcenter this weekend to buy a CPU, motherboard, and RAM combo, and I'm considering the 9800x3D as a potential upgrade. However, I'm open to suggestions for other options that might suit my needs. Additionally, I occasionally use my PC for entry-level art and music production. What do you think would be the best CPU choice for my situation?

If you can, go with something like the 7600X3D or 7800X3D bundles at Microcenter—they're fantastic choices for 4K gaming. But if you're often dropping down to 1080p for competitive games, splurging on the 9800x3D might be your best bet!

True, sticking with 8-core CPUs is probably best for my music production work, and since I'm not into competitive gaming, I might opt for the 7800X3D.

If you're set on Microcenter, the 9800X3D (8 cores/16 threads) is solid. The price difference between the 9800X3D and the 9850X3D is pretty minimal, so that’s a smart choice too. If you need more threads for productivity, consider the 9950X3D, but it's more expensive and may be overkill for mostly gaming.

I agree! The 9950X3D is overkill for me, so the slight price hike for the 9850X3D might be worth it if I'm only spending an extra $20.

The 9800x3D is probably more power than you need. The 7800x3D would be a solid choice, and if you're on a tighter budget, the 7500x3D from Microcenter is also a great bang for your buck.

Just to add, I'm looking to keep my spending around $1k, which might affect my options.

What refresh rate does your monitor support? If it's not high, you might be overpaying for an X3D CPU. Consider the Ultra 7 265 or 270 for a more rounded performance, especially if you're using creative applications. The 270 gives close gaming performance to x3d CPUs and is currently tricky to find, but worth considering.

I should mention that I have a 4K 240Hz OLED monitor, so I definitely need a CPU that can keep up.

Also, I'm leaning towards Ryzen for the B850 AI motherboard—it has great I/O options for my home network upgrades.

Both the 9800x3D and 9850x3D bundles are great options. The 9000 series offers better performance in gaming and productivity, making them worth the extra cash. For around $100 more, the performance improvement is noticeable, especially with 1% lows and thermal efficiency, which is a plus!

Also, don't forget that the bundle for the 9800x3D usually includes a better motherboard, which could justify the price difference.
