I'm upgrading an older prebuilt that currently has an i7-8700K, a GTX 1070 Ti, and recently upgraded to an RTX 5070 and 1000W EVGA power supply. Since the 8700K's platform has very limited upgrade options, I'm willing to replace both the motherboard and CPU. I want a major performance improvement while continuing to use DDR4 memory. My budget is roughly $100–$400 for the processor, though I'm flexible, and motherboard recommendations would also be helpful. I mainly want to avoid pairing the RTX 5070 with a CPU that holds it back, especially in CPU-heavy games such as Rust.

A 12th-generation Intel chip such as the i7-12900K can also be a powerful DDR4 upgrade, but it needs a good cooler and a capable motherboard. The i5-12600K or i5-13600K may offer better value depending on current prices. Any modern LGA1700 processor will be a substantial step up from the 8700K.
Before buying everything, check your monitor’s refresh rate and the games you play. If you’re using a 60Hz display and already maintaining around 60 FPS, a CPU upgrade may not look dramatic until you also move to a higher-refresh monitor. That said, your problems in CPU-heavy games at low settings suggest the 8700K is genuinely limiting performance, so upgrading makes sense in your case.
The Intel Core i5-14600K is another excellent option, especially if you prefer Intel. Get a DDR4-compatible LGA1700 motherboard, ideally a B760 or Z790 model, and make sure the BIOS supports the processor. It offers a large improvement over the 8700K in both gaming and multithreaded workloads without requiring an expensive CPU.
That sounds like a strong all-around option. I’ll make sure the board has an updated BIOS before installing it, since I’ve heard about stability and degradation concerns with some 13th- and 14th-generation Intel chips.
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is probably the strongest gaming-focused choice if you want to stay with DDR4. Pair it with an AM4 B550 motherboard and your existing 16–32GB of DDR4. It is essentially the top gaming chip for that platform, although pricing and availability matter because it is an older generation now.

That’s part of why I’m considering it. The 1070 Ti was already struggling, and games like Rust can drop below 40 FPS even at 1080p on low settings. I’d like the new CPU to handle those CPU-heavy situations much better.
