Can a 550W PSU safely power an RTX 2080 Ti and Ryzen 5 5500?

I found a good deal on an RTX 2080 Ti, but my current power supply is only 550W. The graphics card is commonly paired with a 650W-or-higher PSU, though many recommendations seem to assume a more power-hungry Intel processor. My planned build is a Ryzen 5 5500, ASUS B450-F Gaming motherboard, 16GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4-3200, a 1TB Gen 3 NVMe SSD, a 500GB Gen 3 NVMe SSD, and an AMD Wraith Prism cooler. The PSU is a Thermaltake Smart BX1 550W 80+ Bronze. Would this be safe at stock settings, or should I upgrade the PSU first?

I would upgrade rather than try to make this work permanently. Use a reputable 650W or 750W model with the required PCIe connectors, and avoid relying on a daisy-chained cable if the PSU provides separate cables. Undervolting the 2080 Ti can reduce consumption and may help temporarily, but it does not turn a questionable PSU into a good long-term choice.

In a best-case calculation, the GPU, CPU, motherboard, drives, and memory could stay under about 400W during a sustained load, leaving some headroom on a 550W supply. If the PSU were a high-quality unit with strong 12V output, it might work. The concern here is less the wattage rating and more the quality and transient-handling capability of the BX1.

The total draw might look manageable on paper, but the RTX 2080 Ti can pull around 250W and briefly spike higher. A decent 550W unit may run the system at stock settings, but the Thermaltake Smart BX1 is a budget model, so I would not rely on it for this card. A quality 650W PSU would be the safer choice, with 750W also being reasonable if the price difference is small.
