I found an old iPhone 3G or possibly an iPhone 3GS and would like to use it again. Since it only supports 3G, which is no longer available in many places, is there any practical way to upgrade the phone so it can connect directly to modern 4G or 5G cellular networks?

A workaround is possible, but it would not turn the phone into a 5G device. You could use a separate 4G or 5G hotspot and connect the old phone to it over Wi-Fi. That may allow basic web access or other simple Wi-Fi functions, though many services may still no longer work.
