Can I Add 3200MHz RAM to My Existing 2133MHz Kit?

I have an ASUS Prime Z370-A motherboard with 16GB of DDR4-2133 memory installed. I want to upgrade to 32GB, but I can't find another matching kit at the same speed. Would adding a 16GB kit of DDR4-3200 memory work alongside my existing RAM? I understand that everything would probably run at the slower speed, but I want to make sure mixing the kits won't damage anything or cause other problems.

It shouldn’t damage anything, and the faster kit will normally downclock to match the slower memory. The main risk is compatibility: mixed kits can sometimes fail to boot or become unstable, especially if their timings and voltage differ. If it doesn’t start, remove the new kit and look for a matched replacement instead. After installing it, give the first boot a little extra time for memory training.

If possible, avoid mixing unrelated memory kits. A matched 2x16GB kit or a replacement kit that matches your existing modules is more dependable than combining different sticks. You could also check second-hand listings for the same model and speed as your current RAM. If you do mix them, be prepared to disable XMP or manually use conservative settings.

Check the motherboard manufacturer’s memory compatibility list and compare the specifications of your current RAM with the new kit. The proposed kit uses 3200MHz speed with CL16 timings at 1.35V, so it may need to run at settings compatible with the older modules. Mixing kits often works, but there’s no guarantee that both will run reliably together.
