I'm saving for my first gaming PC and want something affordable that can run story-heavy AAA games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Resident Evil smoothly, while also handling Fortnite and similar competitive games. Ideally, I'd like performance comparable to a PS5, with good image quality and minimal stuttering. My budget is a little over $1,000 if necessary, and I'm buying in the United States. I'd appreciate advice on whether these parts are compatible, whether any components are overkill, and if there are less expensive alternatives that would perform similarly. My current list is an AMD Ryzen 5 5600, Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE cooler, Asus Prime B550M-A WiFi II motherboard, 32GB of DDR4-3200 memory, a 1TB Kingston NV3 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, a PowerColor Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB graphics card, an NZXT H6 Flow case, an MSI MAG A650GL 650W Gold power supply, and Windows 11 Home.

If you can find a Ryzen 7 5800X3D at a good price, it would be the strongest gaming upgrade for this AM4 platform because its extra cache can improve frame rates in some games. However, it’s not automatically the best choice for a budget build; prioritize the graphics card, a reliable power supply, and a good monitor before spending heavily on the CPU. The listed parts are generally compatible, though the large air cooler may be unnecessary for a Ryzen 5 5600 and the case is relatively expensive for a value-focused build.

The Ryzen 5 5600 should work well with this build, but check current pricing before buying. If the Ryzen 5 5600X is only about $10 more, it’s a reasonable small upgrade. The Ryzen 7 5700X gives you two additional cores and may help with heavier multitasking, but it usually won’t make a huge difference in gaming compared with the 5600. Also make sure the motherboard BIOS supports whichever processor you choose.
