Can I Build an AWS Career Without Going to University?

I've just received my A-Level results, and they were much lower than I expected. I had originally planned to study pharmacology at university, and although I received an offer, I'm questioning whether it makes sense to take on around £70,000 in debt for a degree with uncertain graduate prospects. I've become increasingly interested in cloud technology and am currently studying for the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification, which I'm really enjoying. Is there a realistic career path into AWS or cloud computing without a university degree? I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has taken a similar route, including which skills, certifications, projects, or entry-level jobs would be useful.

Certifications can help, but practical technical ability and projects may matter more at the beginning. Learning some programming, automation, and infrastructure tools will give you a stronger foundation than collecting entry-level certificates. Once you’ve built up experience, specialising in cloud services becomes much more realistic.

You could also consider a technology-adjacent course or apprenticeship if university still appeals to you. Something involving software development, digital technology, networking, or IT could open doors without tying you to a very specific career. Entry-level agency, support, or development work can be demanding, but it’s useful for building the experience employers usually want.

A degree isn’t the only route. I’ve worked with excellent technology professionals who came from completely different backgrounds and taught themselves. That said, the current job market is competitive, and automated application systems often filter for degree requirements. A degree isn’t essential everywhere, but you may need to compensate with strong projects, recognised certifications, relevant experience, and a well-written CV.

There’s definitely a path into cloud without a degree, but it probably won’t be a quick jump straight into an AWS role. Finish Cloud Practitioner, then consider Solutions Architect Associate or SysOps Administrator Associate. Alongside that, learn Linux, networking, scripting, and basic security. Build two or three small projects and document them publicly, then look at help-desk, support, or junior infrastructure roles as a way to gain practical experience before moving into cloud.

The biggest factor will be consistency. Plenty of people start enthusiastically, but cloud careers require months or years of steady study and hands-on practice. A sensible plan would be to learn the fundamentals, build projects, apply for junior IT roles, and keep progressing toward an associate-level certification rather than expecting one certificate to lead directly to a cloud architect job.
