Can I comfortably stay on AM4 for another 2–3 years?

My current system has an MSI B550-A Pro motherboard, a Ryzen 5 5600G, a GTX 1660 Super, 16GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4-3200, and a 180Hz 1080p monitor. I mostly play competitive games at low settings, plus occasional single-player titles.

I'm considering a graphics card upgrade, but that has me wondering whether I should also plan a platform upgrade soon. When the time comes to replace the CPU, would it make sense to move to AM5, or could a Ryzen 7 5700X, 5700X3D, or 5800X3D keep this system going for another couple of years? With current component prices, I'm trying to avoid spending more than necessary.

AM5 is worth considering only if the total platform cost is close to an AM4 upgrade. Moving to AM5 means buying a new motherboard and DDR5 memory, while a 5700X3D or similarly priced AM4 chip lets you reuse your current board and RAM. Compare the complete costs rather than focusing only on the CPU; if a discounted AM5 bundle is available, it may offer a better long-term path, but there’s no urgency to replace your existing platform.

The GTX 1660 Super is probably the part to upgrade first. Check which component is hitting 100% usage with an unlocked frame rate, because the answer depends on the games and GPU you choose. For competitive 1080p gaming, your CPU may become the limiting factor after a stronger graphics card, but a Ryzen 5000 X3D chip should still handle high refresh rates well.

That makes sense. I’ll check GPU and CPU usage in the games I play before deciding which upgrade should come first.

Yes, you can reasonably stay on AM4 for another two or three years, especially since you already own a B550 board. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D would be a substantial gaming upgrade, and adding another 16GB of RAM would also help. There’s no need to switch platforms just because AM5 exists.
