Can I Install Windows on a School Chromebook Using an External DVD Drive?

I have a school-issued Chromebook with permission to modify it as part of a school project. I've enabled developer mode and made other changes, but I'm frustrated by the software limitations of ChromeOS. I have an external DVD drive and several blank DVDs, and I'd like to know whether I can install Windows on the Chromebook from a bootable DVD. What hardware, firmware, compatibility checks, and installation steps would be required?

This may not be worth the effort. Many inexpensive Chromebooks have low-power processors, limited storage, and components that lack Windows drivers, so Windows could run poorly even if installation succeeds. A used Windows laptop would likely be faster, cheaper, and much easier to maintain for the project.

The DVD drive is not the main obstacle. If the Chromebook’s firmware supports USB booting, a bootable USB flash drive is usually simpler and more reliable than using an external DVD drive. First identify the exact model, processor, storage capacity, and firmware options, then compare them with the Windows requirements and look for confirmed driver support.

Before changing firmware, make a recovery plan and confirm that the school’s written permission covers firmware replacement, possible data loss, and hardware damage. Back up anything important, research the exact model’s recovery process, and do not assume that a Windows installer will recognize the Chromebook’s keyboard, touchpad, Wi-Fi, or storage.

A standard Chromebook usually cannot boot Windows without replacing or modifying its firmware. Even then, compatibility depends heavily on the exact model, processor, storage, graphics, keyboard, trackpad, and available Windows drivers. Windows 11 may also require security hardware that many Chromebooks do not have, so Windows 10 or a lightweight Linux distribution could be more realistic.

A TPM could theoretically be added to some hardware, but that would require advanced circuit-level work and is generally impractical. Check the specific Chromebook model before attempting any firmware or hardware modification.
