I have a DVD from the UK that I need to play tonight for a movie night. If I buy an external DVD drive for my Mac and install VLC, will that let me bypass the disc's region lock, or does the drive itself need to support the DVD's region?

The most reliable option is a genuinely region-free or multi-region DVD drive. A drive advertised only as an external DVD or Blu-ray drive may still be region-locked, so check the specifications carefully before buying. Some inexpensive listings claim to be region-free, but those claims can be inconsistent.
Computer DVD drives commonly let you change their region a limited number of times, often up to five. After those changes are used, the drive may permanently stay set to the last region, so switching it just for one movie can create problems later.
The external drive still matters. DVD drives usually have a region setting, and a standard drive may refuse a disc from a different region unless the region restriction and CSS encryption are bypassed. VLC can sometimes handle CSS playback, but it does not guarantee that the drive’s region check will be ignored.
VLC often works around CSS on computers, but the exact behavior depends on the operating system, drive, and disc. I wouldn’t count on it as a guaranteed same-day solution.
