I'm very new to Linux and general computer hardware, so please bear with me. I have an Acer Chromebook 315 CB315-4H and would like to completely replace ChromeOS with a regular Linux installation. Is that possible on this model, and what steps or precautions should I know about before attempting it?

It may be possible, but Chromebooks usually require more than simply plugging in a Linux USB installer. Check the device-specific instructions on the MrChromebox firmware site. You’ll generally need to disable the hardware write protection and install compatible UEFI firmware before replacing ChromeOS. Before completely removing ChromeOS, consider using the built-in Linux development environment, commonly called Crostini. It gives you a Linux terminal and lets you install many Linux programs without modifying the Chromebook firmware. If you need a full desktop Linux system, the hardware may still be limited, especially if it has modest RAM and 32 or 64 GB of eMMC storage, so choose a lightweight distribution and back up anything important first.
