I've used Windows for decades, but Windows 11 has been frustrating on my system, with lag, bugs, glitches, and disappointing performance. I'm considering Linux to get away from the bloat and constant changes, but I rely on a lot of software and hardware: a large Steam library, Presonus Studio One 5 for music production, DaVinci Resolve for video editing, VR through Virtual Desktop, and Channels DVR and Plex for media serving.
My PC has an ASRock B550M Pro4 motherboard, Ryzen 7 5700X3D, 64 GB of DDR4 memory, two SSDs, two HDDs, and an RTX 5070 Ti. I don't use Microsoft Office or Adobe products, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my specialized software, games, and VR equipment.
What would be the safest way to try Linux? Can I test different distributions without immediately replacing Windows, and is there any mostly seamless way to transfer my setup? How much software might I need to replace, and how reliable are tools such as Proton and Wine for running Windows-only programs?

Your general hardware should be fine. The safest approach is to make a Linux live USB and boot from it without installing anything. Try a few beginner-friendly distributions such as Linux Mint, Zorin OS, Fedora KDE, or Ubuntu, and compare both KDE and GNOME desktops. If you like one, consider dual-booting or installing it on a spare drive first rather than wiping Windows immediately.
VR is the biggest warning sign. Linux support depends heavily on the headset, tracking hardware, games, and the community software available for that particular setup. Some headsets work reasonably well, but support is far less consistent than on Windows, even when connecting through Virtual Desktop. If VR is important, dual-booting may be the most practical solution so you can keep Windows for VR and any software that does not cooperate with Linux.
Plex and much of the media-server ecosystem work well on Linux, so those may be straightforward. DaVinci Resolve has a Linux version, but it can require more setup and may behave differently from the Windows release. Studio One 5 does not have an official Linux version, so you would need to test it through Wine or consider alternatives such as Reaper. Linux-native video options include Kdenlive and OpenShot, while music alternatives include Reaper, Ardour, and Audacity.
Steam is probably the easiest part of the switch. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer is built into Steam, and you can enable it in the settings. Most games work, though some multiplayer titles with kernel-level anti-cheat do not. Check individual games on ProtonDB and Are We Anti-Cheat Yet before switching. Games from Epic or GOG may need a launcher such as Heroic instead of the regular Steam client.
There isn’t a one-click migration that carries over Windows and every installed program. Linux applications generally need to be installed again, and you may need to relearn some interfaces. Wine-based tools such as Bottles and Lutris can run certain Windows programs, but compatibility is very dependent on the application. They may work immediately, require configuration, or fail completely, so test your important software before committing.
Creative applications are especially difficult because small compatibility problems can disrupt a real workflow. It’s best to keep Windows available until you have tested actual projects, plugins, and hardware rather than just launching the main program.

For gaming-focused options, Bazzite or CachyOS are also worth investigating, although Fedora KDE is a good balance of familiarity, current software, and stability.
