Can I Turn My Apartment’s Ethernet Jack Into My Own Wi-Fi Network?

I recently moved into an apartment where internet service is included in the rent. The building's Wi-Fi connection reaches about 86 Mbps, but the signal is unreliable and my TV buffers frequently. Management said there is an Ethernet jack I can use with my work laptop for a faster connection. Is there a device I can plug into that Ethernet jack to create my own Wi-Fi network and connect several devices? I would rather not use my work laptop for this, since that may not be allowed.

Yes—plug a standard Wi-Fi router into the Ethernet jack using the router’s WAN/Internet port. It will create your own wireless network and also give you extra wired ports. Using a router is generally preferable to just a switch or access point because it separates your devices from other residents’ devices on the building network. Since the building already has a router, you may end up with double NAT, but that usually works fine for streaming and normal browsing.

If you only need more Ethernet ports, an inexpensive unmanaged switch will do that. For Wi-Fi, you could add a wireless access point, or use a router configured in access-point or bridge mode. A router in normal mode is usually the simpler option, though access-point mode can avoid some double-NAT complications.

Keep in mind that the apartment’s internet provider or landlord can potentially see connection metadata, even if the actual traffic is encrypted. A private router improves device isolation, but it does not make the building’s provider unable to observe network activity. Before buying anything, check whether the problem is speed or signal strength. Eighty-six Mbps is normally enough for several HD streams, so the buffering may be caused by weak Wi-Fi coverage, congestion, or an unreliable building access point. Check signal strength in the rooms where the TV is used. If possible, connect the TV directly to your new router with Ethernet for the most reliable connection.
