My current PC is built around an Intel Core i7-6700K, and I would like a substantial CPU upgrade without spending a lot on new memory. The system has an ASRock Z170 Pro4 motherboard, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, an RTX 3080 Ti, a 750W Seasonic Gold power supply, and a Noctua NH-D15 cooler in a Cooler Master Silencio 550 case. Since replacing the CPU also means replacing the motherboard, I assumed I would need to move to DDR5. Are there sensible upgrade paths that let me reuse my DDR4 for now? I am in Switzerland and have not set a firm budget yet.

A 13th- or 14th-generation Intel processor with a B760 DDR4 motherboard is one practical route. You would replace the CPU and motherboard but keep the RAM, cooler, graphics card, case, and probably the power supply. Check cooler mounting support and motherboard BIOS compatibility before buying, especially with a 14th-generation chip.
The best choice depends on what is limiting you. With an RTX 3080 Ti, the 6700K can hold back high-refresh gaming and newer games, but at higher resolutions the GPU may still be the main limit. Before replacing everything, check CPU usage, frame times, and whether your 16GB of RAM is already being fully used. If memory capacity is the problem, adding another matched 16GB kit may be cheaper than a complete platform upgrade, provided your current kit and motherboard support it.
You do not have to move to DDR5 immediately. There are DDR4 versions of Intel's LGA1700 motherboards, so a 12th-, 13th-, or 14th-generation Intel CPU paired with a DDR4 board would let you reuse your existing memory. Just make sure the board specifically supports DDR4, since DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable.
For a lower-cost option, a used Ryzen 5 5600 or 5700X with a B550 motherboard can reuse your DDR4 kit. Either would be a noticeable improvement over the i7-6700K, although the 5700X is the better choice for heavier multitasking. This could be a reasonable temporary platform if you would rather wait before investing in DDR5.
That clears up my misunderstanding. I had assumed every newer motherboard required DDR5, so I will compare the DDR4 versions as well.
