I'm putting together an AM5 system and would mainly like feedback on the motherboard and CPU cooler. The CPU, memory, storage, graphics card, power supply, monitor, keyboard, and mouse are already in my possession and should remain unchanged unless there is a serious compatibility or reliability issue. I understand that the current RX 580 will bottleneck the new system, but I plan to upgrade the graphics card later when pricing makes sense.
The CPU is a Ryzen 9 7900X, and I chose a large dual-tower air cooler. I'd like to know whether that cooler is unnecessarily oversized, a poor value, or otherwise unsuitable. I'm also deciding between the MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI and another MSI board, and I'm interested in differences in features, construction, BIOS support, reliability, and retailer return policies. The system will use a full-size ATX case, although I currently have it packed away and don't remember the exact model.
Please explain any potential problems with my choices rather than simply replacing parts with unrelated alternatives. I'm upgrading from an old AM3 platform, so my performance expectations are fairly modest, and I purchased the CPU and memory within a fairly strict budget.

There’s no need to replace the existing CPU or GPU simply because a different parts list looks better on paper. Given your prices and upgrade path, keeping the 7900X and current memory is defensible. I’d focus the remaining checks on cooler clearance, motherboard features you will actually use, BIOS compatibility, and making sure the older drives are healthy before moving everything over.
The Ryzen 9 7900X is a reasonable choice if you want twelve cores for productivity or general longevity, but it can run hot under sustained workloads. A large dual-tower cooler is completely acceptable here; it isn’t harmful or inherently wasteful as long as it fits the case and doesn’t interfere with the memory or top PCIe slot. A smaller cooler can also handle the chip, but the larger one may provide lower temperatures and noise. Check the cooler’s AM5 mounting hardware and the case’s maximum CPU-cooler height before ordering.
The main concern with the memory is not capacity but speed and timings. DDR5-5200 should work, especially if your budget is tight, though DDR5-6000 with decent timings is generally the performance sweet spot for AM5. If you already bought the kit at a good price, I wouldn’t replace it just to chase a small improvement. Enable EXPO in the BIOS and confirm that the system is stable afterward.
Before finalizing the motherboard, identify the case model if possible. A full-size ATX case should accommodate either board, but the cooler height, front radiator or fan clearance, GPU length, and motherboard heatsink clearance still matter. Also verify that the power supply is a recent, reputable model and that the board’s BIOS supports the 7900X out of the box. The RX 580 will limit gaming performance at 1080p, but it won’t prevent the system from functioning or make the platform upgrade pointless.
The MSI PRO X870-P WIFI and MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI are both capable boards. Paying more for the Tomahawk generally gets you a stronger feature set, more robust power delivery and cooling, and potentially better connectivity, but that doesn’t automatically make the less expensive board unreliable. Compare the exact rear-I/O layout, M.2 slots, USB options, Wi-Fi generation, BIOS-flash features, and fan headers against what you actually need. For a stock 7900X, either should be adequate if the board has the features you want.

My preference for Amazon is mostly because returns and customer service have been good for me. I’m mainly trying to understand whether the Tomahawk offers meaningful advantages over the less expensive MSI board or whether the price difference is mostly branding and extra features.
