Can you sanity-check my high-end PC for gaming, coding, and recording?

I'm building my first PC and have a fairly flexible budget, but I'd like to make sure I'm spending intelligently rather than creating unnecessary bottlenecks. The system will be used for coding, gaming, guitar recording, video recording and editing, and general productivity. I'm especially interested in whether the CPU, cooler, storage, power supply, and monitor are well balanced for the graphics card, or if I'm overspending in certain areas.

The planned build includes a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, a GeForce RTX 5090, 64 GB of DDR5 memory, two 4 TB NVMe drives, a high-refresh 4K monitor, and the necessary case, power supply, and cooling. I'll also use an older 1080p 60 Hz monitor as a second display. My accessories include a dual monitor arm, mechanical keyboard, gaming mouse, Sennheiser HD 600 headphones, an Audient iD24 interface, a Lewitt LCT 440 Pure microphone, a boom arm, a Wi-Fi 7 router, Ethernet and XLR cables, a surge protector, cable ties, and a screwdriver set.

Would you change any components or accessories? Are there any important parts or considerations I've overlooked for assembly, recording, thermals, storage, or noise levels?

I’d look at a Thermalright Phantom Spirit or Peerless Assassin instead of paying more for an elaborate cooler. They provide excellent performance for much less money. Also check the actual memory and SSD listings carefully—some of the displayed prices are wildly inflated, so verify that you’re not accidentally selecting a marketplace seller or an overpriced listing.

For a system with a 5090, I’d use a reputable 1000–1200 W ATX 3.x power supply with a native 12V-2x6 cable. The case should have plenty of room for the graphics card and good airflow, and I’d add enough intake and exhaust fans to keep the system quiet under sustained workloads. Two separate NVMe drives are sensible: one for the operating system and applications, and another for footage and project files. Keep backups elsewhere, since two drives in one computer are not a backup.

That makes sense. I was aiming for an even split between gaming and productivity, so I’ll compare the extra cores against the gaming performance instead of automatically choosing the most expensive CPU.

The 4K 240 Hz OLED is a better match for this graphics card than a 1440p 500 Hz display unless you mainly play competitive esports titles. For coding and editing, the extra resolution and screen space are useful, while the older 1080p monitor works fine as a secondary display. For recording, remember that the interface handles the headphones and microphone, but you’ll still want acoustic treatment, a pop filter, and a plan for managing fan and room noise.

At 4K, the RTX 5090 will usually be the limiting component rather than the CPU, so the 9800X3D is already a strong choice for gaming. If your video-editing workloads are substantial, a higher-core-count chip such as the Ryzen 9 9900X or 9950X3D could improve export and render times, but it may give up some gaming value. The right choice depends on how often you edit versus play games.
