About a year ago I built a PC using the integrated graphics on the CPU because I couldn't afford a dedicated GPU. That setup worked well enough for basic games. Recently, my boyfriend gave me an older GTX 1080 that had been sitting unused for more than three years. It came from a previous PC that eventually stopped working, although nobody knew whether the graphics card was responsible.
My current system has a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, an ASUS Prime B650M-A WiFi II-CSM DDR5 motherboard, 32GB of RAM, a Lexar 2TB NVMe SSD, an 850W 80+ Gold power supply, and Windows 11. The graphics card initially worked normally after installation, and I installed the latest NVIDIA drivers.
While playing modded Minecraft, the monitor suddenly shut off. Normally its power indicator is orange when it's on standby and white when active, but this time the indicator went completely dark and the monitor wouldn't respond to the power button. Unplugging and reconnecting the monitor's power cable temporarily brought it back. The same thing happened later while browsing the web, but after that the monitor stopped powering on entirely.
The monitor is an older Dell model that was already several years old when I bought it from a school graphics-design lab. I'm planning to replace it anyway, but I'm concerned that the GTX 1080 or another part of the PC might have damaged it. Could a graphics card cause this kind of failure, or is the monitor itself more likely to have died? What should I test before connecting a new monitor?

Some Dell monitors do eventually fail with exactly this symptom: no power light and no response until they briefly recover after being unplugged. A bad refresh rate could cause a blank display, but it would not normally make the monitor’s own power indicator disappear or prevent the power button from working. That points to a monitor power-board problem rather than a GPU output setting.
A graphics card normally can’t kill a monitor through the DisplayPort or HDMI connection. Those cables carry a low-power signal, not the kind of current that would usually destroy the monitor’s power circuitry. Since the monitor has no indicator light and won’t respond even with the video cable disconnected, the monitor itself is the most likely failure point. Its age and previous heavy use make that plausible.
Start by troubleshooting the monitor separately from the PC. Disconnect the video cable completely and try another compatible power cable, ideally one you know works. Test a different wall outlet as well. If the monitor still has no light or response, it has probably failed internally and should be replaced. A new monitor should be safe to connect once you confirm the PC is operating normally.
