Could failing RAM be causing my PC to randomly slow to a crawl?

My PC occasionally becomes extremely slow and nearly stops responding. I initially suspected malware, but several scans found nothing. I'm trying to figure out where to start troubleshooting because the system is now out of warranty and I'll need to diagnose it myself. Could faulty RAM be responsible, or should I be checking the storage drive and other components first?

Bad RAM more often causes crashes, blue screens, corrupted files, or random application errors than a steady slowdown. The storage drive, background services, high temperatures, or an overly full system drive are more likely causes. Check temperatures and clock speeds too, and consider a clean operating-system installation only after checking the hardware and backing up your data.

Start by checking Task Manager while the slowdown is happening. Look at CPU, memory, and especially disk usage. If the system drive is stuck near 100% utilization, check its health with a SMART utility such as CrystalDiskInfo and make sure it isn’t nearly full. Back up important files before doing anything stressful to the drive.

Test the memory with MemTest86 or TestMem5. If the test reports errors, disable XMP or EXPO and any other overclocking settings in the BIOS, then test again. If it passes afterward, the memory may be unstable at its configured profile rather than physically defective.

Thanks, I’ll test the memory with the overclocking profile enabled first and then try again with it disabled.

Run both a memory test and a disk-health check instead of assuming it’s malware. If the drive and RAM check out, use Task Manager or Resource Monitor to identify processes consuming resources. A clean Windows reset can be a final software troubleshooting step, but it’s better to investigate first so you don’t hide an underlying hardware problem.
