I was unboxing my Astral 5090 and got a little too excited. I was wearing rubber slippers on carpet, and the card was sitting in its box on my bed. After removing the foam and wrapping, I touched the exposed capacitors on the back with my hand for a few seconds to make sure it wasn't damaged or fake, then put it back in the packaging. I won't be able to test it until my power supply arrives in a few weeks. Could static electricity have killed the card, and is there anything special I should do when installing it?

You’re probably overthinking it. Simply touching the back of the card usually won’t damage it, and modern components have better ESD protection than people often assume. It should be fine.
If you actually felt a noticeable static shock, there is technically a chance of damage, but the card is very likely okay. Since it’s an expensive component, using a $20 grounding strap during assembly is cheap insurance. Also make sure the card is seated straight and don’t force it into the slot.
I’ve assembled several computers on carpet without any issues. Static discharge can cause damage in some cases, but accidentally touching the card doesn’t automatically mean it’s ruined. Avoid touching the contacts and chips unnecessarily, hold it by the edges, and ground yourself before installing it.
That’s reassuring. I’ll definitely use the grounding strap when I put the system together.
I did have a grounding strap—I was just too excited and careless while unboxing it. I’ll use it properly during the build.
