Did defragging my SSD slow down my Windows 11 laptop?

I used Glary Utilities to optimize and defragment the SSD in my mid-range Windows 11 laptop. Since then, installing software and opening programs seem noticeably slower, although the computer still works normally. System Restore was disabled, so there are no restore points available. The SSD is a 256 GB drive with about 130 GB used. Could the optimization or defragmentation have damaged the SSD, and what should I check to find the cause?

It’s possible the slowdown is unrelated to Glary Utilities, especially if everything still works and the change is subtle. SSD defragmentation is not recommended, but it usually does not instantly ruin the drive. Avoid running more optimizer or registry-cleaner tools, install the latest laptop drivers, and compare performance while plugged in versus on battery.

Everything still works, but it definitely feels a little slower. I may run some basic benchmarks and check whether a recent update or background process is responsible.

SSDs generally should not be manually defragmented like traditional hard drives. Defragmenting them can create unnecessary writes, but one run is unlikely to permanently damage the drive. Windows normally handles SSD maintenance with TRIM instead. Check the drive’s health and temperature, and make sure the laptop is not overheating or running in a power-saving mode. CPU and GPU throttling can also make everything feel slower.

The drive is only around half full, so lack of free space probably is not the issue. I’d first check Task Manager for programs using lots of CPU, memory, or disk activity, then review recent Windows or driver updates. Also check the SSD’s SMART health using a reputable drive-monitoring tool. A clean Windows installation can help distinguish a software problem from a hardware problem, but back up important files before doing that.
